Canadian artist Jason Dean Bennison (aka J.D. Fortune) made music history in 2005. At the time, he was homeless, and he beat out 15 other contestants on Rockstar: INXS to become the band’s new singer. 

As the band’s frontman, J.D. injected new life into INXS, recorded a platinum album and toured extensively with the band. Now, J.D. brings the INXS catalog to Michigan for a night of beloved pop hits in the Island Showroom.

A New Sensation

INXS was formed in Sydney, Australia in 1977. It was comprised of Farniss brothers Jon, Tim and Andrew, saxophonist Kirk Pengilly, bassist Garry Gary Beers and charismatic frontman and lyricist Michael Hutchins. 

They began as a “pub rock” band but quickly incorporated elements of funk, pop and dance music into their sound. They achieved significant commercial success in the mid-80s to early 90s with songs like “What You Need,” “Suicide Blonde,” “Never Tear Us Apart” and “New Sensation.” 

INXS has sold 50 million albums worldwide and is the third-highest-selling Australian band behind AC/DC and The Bee Gees. The band has won numerous awards in their native land and internationally. They’ve been nominated for several Grammys and won five MTV music awards, two Brit awards and six ASCAP awards. 

Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 1997 when singer Michael Hutchence was found dead from an apparent suicide related to depression and drug use. The band went on hiatus for a year and then only played occasional shows with various replacement singers.

Almost Torn Apart 

J.D. Fortune was living in his car when he saw the notice for auditions to Rockstar: INXS. He had been raised primarily by his grandparents and drifted through many entertainment industry jobs, including working as an Elvis impersonator. 

Fortune was a clear underdog during the TV competition. However, his versatile voice, stage presence and ability to win over the band landed him the gig as INXS’s new lead singer.

Shortly after Fortune’s victory, he went into the studio with the band and recorded vocals for the album Switch. Fortune wrote the lyrics to the first single, “Pretty Vegas,” during the Rockstar competition, and it became a Billboard hit. 

In 2006, the newly invigorated band hit the road for an extensive world tour that saw them playing shows around the globe over the next two years. But in 2009, it seemed the partnership was eroding, and by 2011, Fortune and INXS had parted ways. 

Since then, J.D. Fortune has worked on several solo projects, including a solo album and music for television. In 2025, he’s hitting the road again, singing the catalog of songs that made him famous.

We unpack the findings from IDnow’s recent UK and France Fraud Awareness Reports to explore the differences in perceptions of fraud, preferences of identity verification solutions and much more.

Separated by just 34km of the English Channel, there are many things that France and the United Kingdom have in common: size of populations, diversity of cultures, and, unfortunately, alarming rates of fraud.  

In France, victims of financial fraud and scams lose at least €500 million annually, while in the UK, the problem appears to be even more pronounced. In fact, in just the first half of 2024, over £570 million was stolen in payment fraud alone. 

In 2024, we published the IDnow UK Fraud Awareness Report, which surveyed members of the British public to explore the nation’s awareness of the latest fraud terms, the industries considered most susceptible to fraud, and how commonly Brits used risky channels like unencrypted messaging platforms to transfer copies or scans of ID documents. Last month, we published an edition focused on France, ‘Fraude bancaire : enquête sur la confiance des Français envers leur banque’ [Bank fraud: survey of French people’s confidence in their bank]. 

Referring to the recent French Report, Cyril Patou, Vice President of Sales (France) at IDnow said: “The results highlight the importance of increased awareness and having open dialogue between financial institutions and users to move forward together in the fight against fraud.” 

In this blog, we explore the differences in results between the two nations and consider why a tailored, culture-specific approach to fraud prevention – and identity verification – is required.

While 54% of UK respondents said they would consider switching banks if they were a victim of bank fraud, only 27% of French respondents agreed, indicating that either the French were more loyal to their banks or accepting of falling victim to fraud. Surprisingly, 11% of French respondents said they had been victims of bank fraud yet had still not changed banks.  

When it comes to fraud terms, the Brits tend to be more informed than their French counterparts. For example, over half of UK respondents said they had heard of ‘deepfakes’ (videos of digitally created people that are typically used to obfuscate the user’s identity), while 42% of French said they had not heard the term combined with a further 25% who said they had heard of deepfakes, but didn‘t know what it means.  

Both countries are currently experiencing a rise in sophisticated digital fraud techniques, including deepfakes. In a recent post on social media, French President Emmanuel Macron shared a montage of deepfake videos featuring himself in popular movies, commenting “nicely done.” In the UK, recent Ofcom data shows that 43% of individuals aged 16 and older have seen at least one deepfake online in the last six months. Deepfakes have clearly arrived and being used for both fun and fraudulent purposes. In fact, the UK government recently declared deepfakes as the “greatest challenge of the online era.”

Attitudes on whether banks are adequately protecting their customers against fraud like deepfakes are largely the same in France (72%) and the UK (73%), leaving more than a quarter of respondents in both countries that either disagree or just don’t know – suggesting better education on not only the latest fraud terms but banks’ methods of fraud prevention is needed.

Which industries cause the French and British public the most concern?

Both France and the UK agree that the riskiest industry when it comes to fraud is financial services (65% and 75% respectively) followed by online shopping. Clearly, these are both industries where it serves for customers to be as cautious as possible, as bank and e-commerce accounts store important personal identifiable information that can be misused for fraudulent purposes. 

Third on the ranking of riskiest industry is social media fraud, which is where a lot of fraud originates, especially social engineering. One of the major differences seen in the IDnow Reports is the perception of public services as a potential source of fraud. While in France, nearly a third of the French population (32%) are concerned, just 13% of the UK public appear worried about eGovernment fraud. Could it be that the French are just more critical of eGovernment services or perhaps it’s just that a higher percentage of the French population are using eGovernment services. 

It appears to be the former, as in 2023, just 34% of the French public reported high or moderately high trust in the national government, below the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s average of 39%.

Government and public preferences in identity verification solutions.

Most industries are either required by regulation to implement identity verification checks or have chosen to do so to optimize processes or fight fraud. Such checks are required for account opening in Banking, compliance checks in Crypto, age verification in Mobility, streamlined check-in processes in Travel, financial risk checks in Gambling, and contract signing in Telecommunication.   

Identity verification requires users to provide and have information associated with their identity verified. This may be checking an identity document, such as a driver’s license, passport, or a nationally issued identity document or by biometric authentication of users’ attributes like fingerprints or facial features. 

Each country tends to have different approaches to fraud prevention and identity verification processes, which is often determined by regulatory requirements. In Germany, for example, video verification is required when opening bank accounts due to strict AML/GwG requirements, however this may all be set to change in the near future. 

In France, the government has a national digital identification program and provides citizens with electronic ID cards that facilitates secure access to various services. This centralized system enhances the efficiency of identity verification processes across both public and private sectors. France also has FranceConnect, the national digital identity federator, where users verify themselves for eGovernment and other regulated services. Our report found that the concept of digital identities was familiar to 72% of French respondents. Plus, a large majority of French (70%) said they would be prepared to use a digital identity to access bank accounts or carry out important transactions.

In the UK, there is currently no one consistent and coherent ID system, with companies instead relying on database checks and document checks of different forms of ID, including driving licences and passports. However, the government is experimenting with various ways of modernizing its approach, including the 2023 release of a Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF) – a set of rules and standards designed to establish trust in digital identity products. 

There was also a flurry of activity at the beginning of 2025 with the announcement that the government planned to launch the GOV.UK Wallet, which was very quickly followed up by panicked questions regarding its impact on the DIATF. 

Once launched, the holders of the GOV.UK Wallet will be able to: 

• Securely save government-issued digital documents  

• Present these documents to organizations, businesses and other parts of government to prove age, identity, or eligibility for services 

When asked which identity verification method they considered the most trustworthy for a secure, reliable and accurate process, 20% of French respondents said document capture and facial recognition, while 42% of UK respondents cited a combination of electronic identity data checks and document capture and facial verification. 

While 16% of French respondents would prefer an expert-led identification process like VideoIdent, just 9% of UK respondents felt the same way. Seemingly, the French are more open-minded toward expert-led solutions than the Brits. However, products like IDnow’s customizable VideoIdent Flex are now becoming increasingly popular in European countries outside Germany, where they have typically enjoyed much success due to national BaFin (Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority) online onboarding regulatory requirements. 

There are clearly differences between the two nations when it comes to awareness of fraud, the industries considered riskiest and their preferred methods of identity verification. However, what is consistent in both the UK and France is the ever-present risk of fraud and the need for a collaborative push by regulatory and government bodies and financial services to commit to fraud prevention.

These women have made their mark in the poker world with both their words and their skills, so let’s look at what players such as Game of Gold winner Maria Ho, British poker legend Liv Boeree, infamous World Series legend Annie Duke and former Full Tilt Poker Red Pro Jen Harman have given us over the years.

1. Annie Duke

“Poker is a skill game pretending to be a chance game.”

Annie Duke is both of poker’s most successful female players and a highly controversial figure. Seen as a leading light in the ladies game in the  first ‘poker boom’ era of the game, Duke won her first and only WSOP bracelet so far in 2004 when she took down the $3,000-entry Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better event for $137,860.

Duke was part of the Ultimate Bet roster at the time when Russ Hamilton was investigated and later proved to have used software able to see other players’ hole cards. The ‘Superuser’ scandal enveloped Duke in 2013 when audio recordings revealed named her as complicit in knowing about the ‘God Mode’ furore. In 2020, Annie Duke retired from poker… but is a player who has pretended to be one thing ever truly another? We could yet see Duke return to the game she succeeded in during its biggest era of growth.

2. Vanessa Selbst

“In poker, as in life, you have to take risks to get ahead.”

Another retired player is Vanessa Selbst – although recent forays in live events hint at a partial return to the action the player many believe is the best female player ever to look down at hole cards. A three-time WSOP bracelet winner in Pot Limit Omaha, 10-Game mix and Mixed Max No Limit Hold’em, Selbst has 21 six-figure poker scores and until another lady on this list surpassed her, was the record holder for bracelets.

Selbst quit the game she loved after training to be a lawyer before taking it up. Switching to hedge fund management when she started a family with her girlfriend, Selbst left poker behind after getting bad beat horrifically in one of the most infamous WSOP Main Event hands of all-time, losing with a full house on Day 1 against Gaele Baumann’s quads.

3. Jennifer Harman

“Poker is not about the cards you’re dealt—it’s about how you play them.” 

The former Full Tilt Poker poster girl Jennifer ‘Jen’ Harman has been a poker legend for many years and has more than adapted to the strength of her hand over the decades she has spent in the game. With two open event WSOP bracelets, (in NL 2-7 Draw and NLHE), Harman has earned the respect of her peers and in 2015 was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.

Part of poker reality series and films too, Harman was a feature in many of televised poker’s finest moments. As well as her excellent poker career, Harman loves animals and is a big fundraiser for the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Winning just under $3m at the live felt alone, Harman’s cash game prowess is such that you can probably treble those winnings over the years.

4. Liv Boeree

“You have to learn how to lose before you can learn how to win.”

If ever there was a convincing argument to make Liv Boeree your poker hero, her most recent performance is it. Boeree’s fourth-place finish in the $25,000 GGPoker Super Main Event earned her a spectacular $2.8 million – the biggest prize of her poker career. For a one-time PokerStars Team Pro, Boeree’s win came as a surprise to some, given that she’d stepped back from the poker industry for some time.

A long-time poker professional, Liv Boeree shot to fame when she won the 2008 EPT Main Event in San Remo. With her flight home from another European stop delayed due to an ash cloud over mainland Europe, she ensconced in San Remo, a small Italian village where an EPT Main Event was being held. Boeree won it for well over a million dollars and her stratospheric rise to fame went from there.

Winning a WSOP bracelet with her boyfriend Igor Kurganov, Boeree has recently stopped playing poker, focusing on her scientific interests and starting a successful podcast called Win-Win. Optimal it might not have been, but her trip to WSOP Paradise in December yielded her biggest ever score… and Igor didn’t even have a piece!

5. Maria Ho

“Being good at poker is a lot like being good at anything else: You have to put in the work.”

There are few players in the game of poker who have ever put the work in like Maria Ho. The legendary poker professional isn’t just an accomplished tournament player, but a leading light to female players around the world. Winning the 2023 poker reality TV show Game of Gold, Maria catapulted herself into the celebrity realm, winning the sole prize in the event – $456,000.

Since winning Game of Gold, Maria has continued her quest for a WSOP bracelet, becoming one of the very best not to win one yet. With victories on the Celebrity Poker Tour, she is also commanding respect across the mainstream media just as she has in poker for decades. Check out this incredible hand against Sofie Dossi from the most recent CPT event where Maria is 3% on the flop and somehow wins the hand. It was probably the best hand to take place in 2024.

6. Kathy Liebert

“Poker is a war. People pretend it’s a game.”

The notion that poker is a battle is deep-rooted in the game’s rich and colored history. Doyle Brunson once compared the art of playing poker to an all-out war and the last female poker player to make the WSOP Main Event final table, Kathy Liebert agrees. Liebert isn’t just a Female Poker Hall of Famer, but a class act all round and has inspired players of both sexes for the lion’s share of half a century.

Still a player to this day, Liebert will leave behind a legendary legacy… but not before she tries to add to her trophy collection.

7. Vanessa Rousso

“I play every hand like my tournament life depends on it, because most of the time, it does.”

No longer a part of the poker industry, Vanessa Rousso still spoke the absolute truth when she described the intensity at which she played. Rousso was an impressive poker player, cashing in nine out of 11 years at the WSOP between 2005 and 2016, winning major trophies along the way.

Now retired from poker, Rousso formed a DJ Duo called ‘N1TEL1TE’ with her wife Melissa Ouellet, and was a contestant on season 17 of the reality television show Big Brother in 2015, finishing third. A few years ago, the former French poker superstar qualified as an attorney. On Instagram, she said: “Want to know the secret behind my career success? It’s simple: got for it and be open to reinventing yourself along the way. Don’t wait for the perfect moment – take the leap and reach for the stars!” It’s hard to argue that Rousso ever fell short in a life that includes ‘poker legend’ among her many achievements.

8. Barbara Enright

“You don’t have to be the best player at the table, just the smartest.”

Barbara Enright – still playing in Mixed Game Festivals to this day in Las Vegas – is a World Series of Poker legend and a history maker in the game of poker. Winning in the money in the 2005 Main Event from just a $10 satellite, Enright’s return on investment in that event mirrors the incredible value she has given her supporters over the years.

A three-time bracelet winner in 1986, 1994 and 1996, Enright was the first woman ever to win a bracelet in an open WSOP event rather than the Ladies Event. Having won over $1.7 million at the live felt, Enright is also an ambassador for the Poker League of Nations and editor-in-chief for Woman Poker Player magazine.

9. Kristen Foxen

“Bluffing is an art. When done right, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

 Kristen Foxen (nee Bicknell) is one of the best poker players of the modern age and the fact that she is female is almost a non-topic given her poker and influence in the game as whole.

While she is a passionate player who advocates more female players in the game, Foxen – married to her fellow poker crusher husband Alex – is a shining example of how a player of any sex can achieve whatever they hope to in the game by working hard and studying even harder. Foxen kicked off 2025 how she means to carry on, winning the PokerGO Tour Kick Off series event for a huge six-figure score:

10. Melanie Weisner

“Success in poker isn’t about luck—it’s about making the right decisions over and over again.”

Melanie Weisner is a terrific example of a poker player who crushes hard at the live felt. The American, who has won over a million dollars at the live poker felt alone, once finished 127th in the WSOP Main Event back in 2016. In fact, between 2013 and 2017, Weisner cashed deep in the World Championship three times and was a force to be reckoned with.

A passionate New Yorker, Weisner has won a trio of ranking events and has ranking results dating back to 2009. The professional knows that consistency is key and over the years she has shown that no matter how important luck is in any one hand, in poker, skill will always prevail and over time, Weisner has risen to the top time and time again.
